Pokemon for Beginners Part 4

Typings and Matchups

Every Pokemon has a Type and it determines what is goin to be strong or weak against, Pokemon moves also have aa Typing and as well it determines what is going to be strong or weak against certain Pokemon, As of today in generation 6, there are 18 types and those are:

Each of these types have their strengths and weaknesses and you can learn them, or know them by using a simple chart like this one:

On the chart the Attacking Type side is for the type of the move you are using and the Defending Type is the type of Pokemon you are using it against, the 0x means that the Pokemon will not recieve any damage from that attack, wich translates to the Defending Pokemon "not being affected" by it, the 1/2x means the defending Pokemon will recieve half of the damage from that hit, being "not very effective", the 1x means that the Defending Pokemon is reciveing neutral damage, and the 2x means that the Pokemonis recieveng twice the damage translating it into a "very effective" move.

Since not all Pokemon have only one typing the chart also serves to calculate the strengths and weaknesses of your Pokemon, for example a Rock and Steel type will recive not 1/2 but 1/4 of the damage from a Normal type move, a Fighting and Dark type will recieve 0 damage from a Phsychic type attack, that is beacause despite Fighting beaing week to it, Dark is inmune to it and so 2 x 0 is , also if you recieve a Fire attack while being an Ice and Grass type you will recive 4x times the damage, because both types are weak to fire, it's really simple math, you just multiply to get your result, and so some Pokemon have more weaknesses than others, but also more resistances.

Now that you know about Pokemon Typings we can have a look at Pokemon Moves right here in this next part: Part 5 Pokemon Moves
